The Festa dos Tabuleiros returns
Once every four years, the town of Tomar, an hour and a half from Lisbon, fills with flowers, bread and people for the Festa dos Tabuleiros. The last edition was in 2023, and Tomar has confirmed the next one for July 2027. The town council will announce the programme and the day of the great procession of the trays.
In the procession, hundreds of young women dressed in white carry on their heads a tabuleiro: a tall tray of bread and paper flowers, crowned with a dove or a cross, as high as the woman who carries it. Each walks beside a partner, and the streets of the town are decorated for days before.
Bringing a group
A festival held only every four years draws crowds, and Tomar is a small town. For a group, what makes the difference is where you watch the procession from, how you get in and out, and where you have lunch. We build the day around that, and pair it with Tomar’s Convent of Christ, the old headquarters of the Templars, and the rest of central Portugal.
